Shrimps with tomato sauce

You‘ve probably heard that lycopene which is richly found in tomatoes is a unique medicine for many types of cancer and heart diseases, but did you know that most of lycopene is found in heat-treated tomatoes? So, this tomatoes and shrimps duet recommended by chef Gaspar Fernandes is not only food but also a medicine, not to mention the perfect combination of flavours!

Ingredients for two servings:

  • 3 plum tomatoes of „Kietaviškių“
  • 6 cherry tomatoes of “Kietaviškių“
  • 10 fresh shrimps
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • A teaspoon of butter
  • A half of lime
  • Olive oil
  • Chilli pepper
  • Basil
  • Salt and pepper


  1. Cover up cleaned shrimps by 2 pinches of chilli spices, a pinch of salt and pepper, mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil. Marinate the shrimps for about 10 minutes;
  2. Place a pot on medium heat with 2 spoons of olive oil and add the chopped onion;
  3. Once the onion is soft, add garlic, salt, pepper and cook it about one minute then add chopped tomatoes;
  4. Simmer it for 20 minutes on low heat, then add chopped basil leaves;
  5. Heat a pan on high heat, then leave it on medium and cook the shrimps for 1 minute on each side. Finish with lime juice and a tablespoon of butter;
  6. Serve the sauce on a plate topped with shrimps with additional chilli flakes and lime if needed.
